I grew up in the country outside the town of Millstadt, IL, just a 15-minute drive to St. Louis, Missouri. Living in the country, my siblings and I spent our days using our imagination. Playing kitchen with pots, dirt, and tree seeds; running our trucks under the corn crib; or riding our bikes back and forth to grandma's house.
During my teen years, my creativity from my childhood imagination translated into a love for drawing and writing poems. I would spend hours crafting my skill by placing a VHS of a Disney movie to the side and seeing how long it would take me to emulate the cover to perfection. It took lots of practice.
In high school, I fell in love with creative writing, specifically poetry. Poems just came to me with ease. I saved them all in a binder, I had hundreds of them.
In 1997, during my early years of college, I started dating a handsome, charming young man who didn't understand my poetry. He was unkind about my content and dismissed my talent.
One afternoon while attending summer school, I succumbed to my insecurities and walked my binder of poems to the dumpster outside my apartment and tossed it all away. For the next 26 years, I never wrote a poem again.
Then in January 2023, I attended a revival praise and worship service. I saw a poetry book and told one of the leaders how I use to love writing, but I threw all of it away because a boy didn't like my work. The leader said, "Never let anyone steal a gift God gave you."
I sat up front for the service, enjoying the presence of the Lord by singing and praising Him. A couple of days later, after spending time with the Lord, a poem came to my mind about the experience. This is when I realized my gift of writing had been restored. I have been writing ever since.
This experience has created a bond between me and my children. They too have begun to love to write and draw. Stay tuned, you may see some of their books up for sale one day.
If I can share anything with you, never throw a gift away, even for a guy (or gal). What the Lord gives you should be celebrated. Go and create, regardless of the gift!! Be great!
"We have become his poetry, a re-created people that will fulfill the destiny he has given each of us, for we are joined to Jesus, the Anointed One. Even before we were born, God planned in advance our destiny and the good works we would do to fulfill it."
